Astronomy in the classroom

What this is

Every tool below runs in a browser tab on a school machine, with nothing installed and nobody signed in. They are not animations of what space looks like — the positions are computed from the real orbits when the page loads, and every page states plainly what its picture exaggerates. That last part is the lesson more often than the picture is.

The link is the lesson plan. Place, date, zoom and speed all ride in the address, so one link puts the projector and thirty student screens on the same sky — and a link you send home on Friday opens the same view on a kitchen laptop.

The one that surprises a class most costs nothing and needs no screen: shrink the Earth to a 16 mm marble, walk the moon 48 cm down the corridor as a 4.4 mm peppercorn, and leave the 1.7-metre sun 188 metres away at the far end of the building. The simulator's scale card computes those figures from its own drawing, so they cannot drift from the picture the class just watched.
